Kirsty
Meet
Introducing our newest team member Kirsty Tatere. As an educator and Ministry of Education PLD facilitator, Kirsty works with schools in the Taupō, Hawke’s Bay and Waikato regions to grow and sustain the Structured Literacy approach.
Kirsty has spent many years in the education sector as a teacher, leader and more recently a PLD facilitator. She has always had a special interest in literacy and over the last 3 years has dedicated much of her time to professional development around The Science of Reading including completing LETRs training and IMSLE training in 2021 and 2022. Kirsty is passionate about working alongside leadership teams and teachers to align up-to-date literacy research with classroom practice.
Kirsty believes that all children deserve access to an education that teaches them to read and write and is excited that evidence-based practice is gaining momentum in New Zealand. Teachers, like their students, deserve to be equipped with the knowledge and practice essential to delivering quality literacy instruction.
Kirsty continues to build her own knowledge by attending courses, listening to podcasts, watching webinars, and following the research of key players in The Science of Reading World.
“It can be an information overload when beginning your Structured Literacy journey. Having someone to support you to unpack the learning makes the process far less daunting.”
“Being proficient in literacy has an impact on a child’s whole life. What we have been doing over the past 20 years has clearly not been working. We must be prepared to listen to what the research says and use it to guide our practice."
"It would be irresponsible for us to ignore it; the stakes are too high. This cannot be left to chance.”
