About the Event

Our three-day MOE-funded Year 4-8 Structured Literacy workshop with Liz Kane Literacy Facilitators will give your teachers an understanding of the Science of Learning, Science of Reading and Structured Literacy which underpin this pedagogy.  We will support teachers to start implementing a Structured Literacy approach including the teaching of phonemic awareness, reading, spelling, handwriting, fluency, and vocabulary, and administer assessments that align with Structured Literacy.

The Year 4-8 PLD will include:

Teaching The Code (Spelling and Morphology). How to accelerate students well below with spelling and what a week of spelling can look like to ensure we meet the needs of all students. We will model lessons, and teachers will plan and rehearse elements of the lesson, setting them up to plan, assess and teach The Code with confidence.

The Teaching of Writing, following a scope and sequence. We will use the Syntax Project, The Writing Revolution, and ThinkSRSD to show explicit teaching of syntax leading to a well-constructed paragraph and multi-paragraphs across many contexts. We will demonstrate how to link the syntax for writing with the Knowledge students are learning.

The Teaching of Reading, Vocabulary and Fluency. Using a scope and sequence for older struggling readers and whole class reading linking explicit teaching of Vocabulary with the Knowledge being taught. Also, the relevance and importance of Fluency when reading, what it is, strategies to give students many opportunities to practice and improve their fluency throughout the week and how we can measure Fluency to ensure students are reading at an appropriate rate.

There will also be a suite of assessments that align with this Structured Literacy PLD.

Morning Tea is provided each day.
